About the Project

Project Title

Preventing Suicide and Mental Health Challenges Among Justice Staff and Vulnerable Populations Through Sustainable Strategies: Preventing Risks and Ensuring Viable, Effective, Novel Tactics

Project Acronym: PREVENT

Description

The PREVENT project directly responds to the EU4Health Work Programme’s priority of fostering a comprehensive, prevention-oriented approach to mental health by addressing systemic gaps in suicide prevention, mental health literacy, and workforce resilience within the justice sector.

The project targets probation officers, correctional staff, and community professionals who engage with vulnerable populations, including ex-offenders, individuals under community supervision, homeless persons, and veteransโ€”groups disproportionately affected by mental health disorders and suicide risk. Despite the recognized need, there is limited training, policy coherence, and structured cross-sector collaboration in addressing these challenges. PREVENT will bridge these gaps through an integrated, multi-sectoral strategy that enhances the early identification, assessment, and referral of individuals with emerging mental health issues.

A structured, evidence-based training programme will equip justice professionals with specialized competencies in mental health crisis management and suicide prevention, ensuring they can effectively engage at-risk individuals while safeguarding their own psychological well-being. The project will also develop and pilot digital risk assessment tools to standardize mental health screening within probation services, promoting early intervention and continuity of care.

PREVENT fosters policy innovation and knowledge-sharing through transnational collaboration, leveraging best practices from across the EU to harmonize approaches to mental health in justice settings. Through a series of awareness-raising seminars, national roundtables, and policy dialogues, the project will strengthen multi-sectoral cooperation, ensuring long-term integration of mental health literacy into probation frameworks. PREVENT will enhance mental health outcomes, reduce suicide risks, and contribute to a more resilient, inclusive, and prevention-oriented justice system across the EU.
